Seven Star Park

1 Qixing Road, Qixing District, Guilin

Seven Star Park is Guilin’s largest comprehensive park (137 hectares), named for seven karst peaks arranged in a Big Dipper / Ursa Major constellation pattern. Highlights include Camel Hill (named for its silhouette — Bill Clinton gave a speech here in 1998), Hua Bridge (a Ming-dynasty stone bridge), Putuo Mountain temple, Seven Star Cave (a 1km show cave with stalactite formations), Guilin Zoo (with giant pandas), and walking paths along the Xiaodong River. Entry ¥80. More accessible for elderly/family travelers than Diecai/Fubo Hill climbs. Worth 3 hours if you want a relaxed park day amid Guilin’s karst landscape; skip if your itinerary is already packed with Li River + Yangshuo activities.

What Chinese travelers actually do here

Distilled from Chinese-language travel notes — the practical tips most English guides miss.

  • The ‘Seven Stars’ (北斗七星) layout — peaks arranged like the Big Dipper constellation — is barely visible on the ground. The Big Dipper pattern only emerges from satellite imagery. Don’t expect to ‘see’ the constellation while walking; the naming is conceptual.
  • Hua Bridge (花桥) is a Ming-dynasty (15th-century) stone bridge that’s photogenic at golden hour — five arches reflected in the Xiaodong River, with karst peaks behind. This is the strongest single photo opportunity in the park.
  • Seven Star Cave (1 km show cave) is similar to Reed Flute Cave but smaller and with less aggressive lighting. If you’re skipping Reed Flute, Seven Star Cave is a reasonable substitute. If you’ve done Reed Flute, skip this one.
  • The park has 4-5 entrances scattered around its perimeter. The MAIN entrance is on Qixing Road (north side), but the EAST entrance (Liberation Bridge) is closer to most central Guilin hotels — 5-min walk. Use the east entrance to skip taxi time.
  • Photography note: Camel Hill is BEST from the east-facing viewpoint behind the small lake, NOT from the main path. Look for the small Chinese sign ‘骆驼山观景’ (Camel Hill Viewpoint) — leads to a less-known angle.
  • Avoid weekends — Guilin locals use Seven Star Park as their family weekend park. Saturdays + Sundays bring 5x the foot traffic. Weekday mornings are quietest.

Frequently asked questions about Seven Star Park

Is Seven Star Park worth visiting?
Only for specific situations: (1) traveling with elderly parents who can’t do karst-hill climbs, (2) traveling with kids who want to see giant pandas, OR (3) you want a relaxed park afternoon between heavy sightseeing days. Skip if you’re a solo traveler or couple maximizing major Guilin sights — the park is pleasant but not iconic.
Why did Bill Clinton speak here?
Camel Hill inside Seven Star Park hosted Clinton’s 1998 China-visit speech on environmental protection — the karst landscape made a symbolic backdrop. A small plaque marks the spot. Most Chinese tourists photograph it; foreign tourists generally don’t recognize the reference. The hill’s actual interest is its camel-silhouette rock shape.
Should I pay extra for the panda zoo?
Yes if you have kids; no if you’re an adult solo/couple traveler. The Guilin Zoo section (separate ¥20 ticket on top of ¥80 park entry) has 2 giant pandas in mid-quality enclosures — not as impressive as Chengdu’s panda research base. Skip if you’ve seen pandas elsewhere. The red panda enclosure is more enjoyable, less crowded.
How does Seven Star Park compare to other Guilin city parks?
Largest in scale (137 hectares vs Diecai/Fubo Hill parks at <20 hectares each), but the SCENERY is less iconic. You don’t get the dramatic karst panorama here that you get from Diecai or Fubo summits. Better for casual strolling than for photographic moments.
How long should I budget?
2-3 hours for the standard circuit: Hua Bridge → Camel Hill → Putuo Mountain temple → Seven Star Cave → exit. Add 60-90 min if visiting the panda zoo. Don’t try to compress below 2 hours; the park is large and walking between sections takes time.
