Tianmen Mountain (literally 'Heaven's Gate Mountain') is the second of Zhangjiajie's two scenic systems — completely separate from Wulingyuan / Yuanjiajie and confused at your peril. Located 8 km south of Zhangjiajie city proper (just behind the railway station), it features: the 131m natural cave arch ('Heaven's Gate') reached by climbing 999 steps; the world's longest passenger cableway (7,455m, 28 min ride) which crosses directly above the 99-bend Tongtian Avenue road; three glass skywalks bolted to the cliff face (60-100m sections); and the temple-and-summit ridge with Tujia ethnic architecture. Tickets are ¥278 including cableway, all summit walks, and a shuttle bus down the 99 Bends (which is one-way). Allow a full 5-6 hours and don't combine with Wulingyuan in the same day — they're 50 minutes apart by car, both deserve a full day, and your legs will not survive both.

- ▸The 999-step climb is uphill from the cave's base — escalators do steps 100-900 for ¥32 if you skip the most grueling part. Worth it on hot days; not worth it in spring weather.
