Tianmen Mountain (literally ‘Heaven’s Gate Mountain’) is the second of Zhangjiajie’s two scenic systems — completely separate from Wulingyuan / Yuanjiajie and confused at your peril. Located 8 km south of Zhangjiajie city proper (just behind the railway station), it features: the 131m natural cave arch (‘Heaven’s Gate’) reached by climbing 999 steps; the world’s longest passenger cableway (7,455m, 28 min ride) which crosses directly above the 99-bend Tongtian Avenue road; three glass skywalks bolted to the cliff face (60-100m sections); and the temple-and-summit ridge with Tujia ethnic architecture. Tickets are ¥278 including cableway, all summit walks, and a shuttle bus down the 99 Bends (which is one-way). Allow a full 5-6 hours and don’t combine with Wulingyuan in the same day — they’re 50 minutes apart by car, both deserve a full day, and your legs will not survive both.

- Tianmen Mountain Up vs Down has a strict one-way logic: cable car UP from the city, shuttle bus DOWN via the 99 Bends. Going the reverse direction is technically possible but adds 90 minutes and costs more. Plan the standard direction.
- The 999-step climb is uphill from the cave’s base — escalators do steps 100-900 for ¥32 if you skip the most grueling part. Worth it on hot days; not worth it in spring weather.
- Glass skywalks: bring sunglasses. The glass shows scratches and dust badly in sunlight, ruining photos. Polarized sunglasses + lift your phone above the glass surface (not on it) for the best shots.
- Eat lunch in Zhangjiajie city center before going up, not at the summit restaurants. Summit food is ¥60-100/person for mediocre fried rice. The cable car ticket is ‘enter once, exit once’ — you can’t easily come back down for lunch and re-enter.
- The Tongtian Avenue 99-bend road is the photogenic part on the way down — sit on the LEFT side of the shuttle bus for the road-curve views. Right side faces the cliff and you see nothing.
- Tianmen Mountain weather is its own microclimate — clear in the city but completely fogged in 1,500m up. Check the cableway official WeChat account ‘tianmenshanlvyou’ that morning before committing; if cableway is suspended for fog, switch your day to Wulingyuan and reverse the itinerary.

- Tianmen Mountain cable car base is a 5-minute walk from Zhangjiajie Railway Station. Take any taxi (¥20) or walk. The ticket office gets queues by 9 AM — buy ahead on Trip.com / WeChat to skip 30+ min waits.
- How long is the cable car ride?
- 28 minutes one way, 7,455m total length. It’s the world’s longest passenger cableway and crosses directly over the 99-bend Tongtian Avenue road — the views during the ride are themselves a tourist attraction. Cable car closes in high wind (winter) or dense cloud.
- Is the glass skywalk safe?
- Yes — engineering-rated for 800 people per 100m section, regularly stress-tested. The vertigo is psychological not structural. Most foreigners wear the provided foot covers (¥5 deposit) and walk slowly along the wall side. Three separate sections, total ~200m of glass floor at 1,400m elevation.
- Can I drive up Tianmen Mountain instead of cable car?
- Yes — the cable car ticket includes one-way shuttle bus down the 99 Bends. You CANNOT drive yourself up; the 99 Bends road is closed to private cars. Tour groups occasionally arrange minibuses up the road and cable car down (reverse direction) for a different experience.
- How much physical fitness is needed?
