What Chinese travelers actually do here
Distilled from Chinese-language travel notes — the practical tips most English guides miss.
- ▸Hike it one way ending at Big Wave Bay, then reward yourself with a swim and Thai food before bussing back.
- ▸The first climb to Shek O Peak is the steepest part; pace it slowly and the rest of the ridge feels easy.
- ▸There is no water, shop or toilet on the ridge itself, so buy drinks at Shau Kei Wan before the bus.
- ▸Morning light backlights the sea on the south side; afternoon haze often flattens the views, so go early.
- ▸Bus 9 is small and popular; queue early on weekends or you may wait through several departures.
- ▸Wear proper grip shoes, as the packed-earth and rock steps turn slippery for days after rain.
- ▸If short on time, the first 45 minutes to the peak viewpoint already delivers the signature panorama.

Frequently asked questions about Dragon's Back Hike
- How hard is the Dragon's Back hike, and how long does it take?
- It is a moderate ridge walk of about 8.5 km, roughly three hours one way, with a manageable climb up to Shek O Peak early on. Most reasonably fit travellers in trainers can finish it, but the exposed ridge offers little shade. The reward is near-constant 360-degree views of the south coast and the South China Sea.
- How do I get to the Dragon's Back trailhead by public transport?
- Take the MTR Island Line east to its terminus, Shau Kei Wan, then catch bus 9 toward Shek O. Ride about 25 minutes and get off at the To Tei Wan stop, where the trail entrance is signposted. The fare is around HK$10 by Octopus card. The bus can fill up on weekend mornings, so arrive early.
- When is the best time to hike Dragon's Back?
- October to March gives cool, dry, clear weather ideal for the ridge. In any season, start by 7 to 10 AM before the heat builds. Avoid summer afternoons from June to September, when fierce heat and sudden thunderstorms make the exposed ridge dangerous. Carry at least two litres of water and sunblock regardless of season.
