Does ChatGPT Work in China? No — It's Blocked on Two Fronts (2026)
No — ChatGPT is blocked by China's Great Firewall, and OpenAI's own country list excludes mainland China too, so a VPN alone may not fix it. A roaming eSIM routes data outside China through the same foreign-gateway mechanism that's reported getting other blocked apps through, but set up your account before you fly — that's the half a China connection can't fix, and even a pre-made account isn't fully risk-free once you're using it from inside China.
You've leaned on ChatGPT for the whole trip — translating a menu, drafting an email to your Airbnb host, checking a train transfer. You land, open the app on the hotel Wi-Fi, and get a blank screen, then a timeout. Try a fresh install instead and it's worse: it won't even let you finish creating an account.
Two separate things are stopping you, not one. China's Great Firewall blocks OpenAI's servers the same way it blocks Google and Instagram — and OpenAI's own country policy has never covered mainland China either, so even a connection that gets past the firewall doesn't fully solve it.
Why ChatGPT is blocked twice over
China's Great Firewall blocked ChatGPT's domain on March 2, 2023 — about four months after its November 2022 launch, not right at launch — filtering it alongside Google and Instagram (Rest of World tracking research). OpenAI itself has never let people sign up from China or Hong Kong either, reported as early as July 2023 (ABC News Australia).
OpenAI made the block official on its own end too: starting July 9, 2024, it began enforcing its "supported countries and territories" policy against API traffic, after warning developers roughly two weeks earlier that access from unsupported regions — including mainland China — would be cut (Rest of World, June 2024; The Register, June 2024). Consumer ChatGPT was already unavailable in China "more or less from the beginning," per that reporting. OpenAI's supported-countries page still excludes mainland China, Hong Kong and Macau (verified 2026-08-28) — and Anthropic's Claude publishes the same exclusion.
Where you connect changes the answer
Whether ChatGPT loads has less to do with the app than with two separate walls — China's, and OpenAI's own — and only one of them cares which network you're on.

What to do about it
Getting ChatGPT working in China is mostly a before-you-fly problem, and half of it isn't a network problem at all.
One more thing worth knowing if you're leaning on a VPN as backup: China's cybersecurity laws require VPN services to be licensed by the Chinese government, and the consumer VPNs sold abroad are not — the full legal picture is in our VPN guide.
- Sign in to (or create) your ChatGPT account before you fly, on a supported-country number and network — reported 2023 registration workarounds suggest sign-up checks where your number is from (ABC News Australia, July 20, 2023) — that's the half a China connection can't fix.
- Know the limit even then: OpenAI's own supported-countries page warns that accessing or offering access to its services outside the listed countries and territories may get an account blocked or suspended — even one you set up in advance. Treat this workaround as a trip-length fix, not a permanent one.
- Buy and activate an international-roaming eSIM before you fly, and keep it set as your active data line so ChatGPT's traffic exits abroad, not through domestic infrastructure.
- Test the app on the eSIM's roaming data before you leave the airport, so you know both the account and the connection work.
- If you also want a VPN as backup, install it and log in once over home Wi-Fi — China's app stores won't have it once you land.

What loads natively instead
If ChatGPT won't cooperate and you need something working right now, domestic Chinese assistants are hosted inside mainland China's own networks, and travelers on r/chinalife report they load on any network in China with no VPN or eSIM required, as of August 2026. DeepSeek and Alibaba's Qwen both publish usable English-language interfaces. ByteDance's Doubao and Moonshot's Kimi lean more toward a Chinese-speaking audience — an English reply is usually available, but the interface and sign-up flow assume more Chinese than the two above.
None of them import your ChatGPT conversation history or custom instructions, so treat them as a stopgap for the trip, not a replacement. For a quick translation or a same-day itinerary question, though, they're already loading while ChatGPT is still spinning.
