Jiefangbei (the Monument to People's Liberation) was built 1947 to commemorate KMT-led victory over Japan in WWII. The 27.5m clock tower is still the geographic zero-point of Chongqing — distances measured from here. The plaza around it is the city's prime CBD shopping district (Times Square style) with high-end international brands. Free to visit. Best at night when the monument is lit and the neon city walls light up. The plaza connects via underground walkways to Hongya Cave (15 min) and Raffles City (20 min). Combine all three in one evening walk. KFC, Starbucks, and the Apple Store all on the plaza for normal Western chain stops.
