What Chinese travelers actually do here
Distilled from Chinese-language travel notes — the practical tips most English guides miss.
- ▸The 7:30 AM opening is non-negotiable. By 10 AM the pandas finish breakfast and retreat to sleep — you'll see motionless balls of fur for the rest of the day. Arrive by 7:15 to be at the front gate.
- ▸Skip the Panda Cub Nursery (幼年大熊猫别墅) if you visit October-March — newborns are seasonal (peak August-September), and the rest of the year the building is just empty glass enclosures.
- ▸The Red Panda enclosure (小熊猫产房) is on the far western side of the park, 25 minutes' walk from the main giant-panda buildings. It's empty 80% of the time because tour groups never get there. Red pandas are arguably cuter and much more active than giant pandas — do not miss.
- ▸Subway Line 3 to Panda Avenue station (熊猫大道) then Bus 198/198A is ¥4 vs ¥80 for a Didi from city center. The bus drops you 100m from the gate; signage is bilingual.
- ▸The 'volunteer for a day' programs advertised for ¥700-1500 at the Panda Base are NOT at the Base itself — they're at the Dujiangyan Panda Research Center (都江堰熊猫乐园), 70 km away. Book through the official site at 700 RMB; the Trip.com listing at 1200 RMB is the same program with a markup.
- ▸The electric park cart (¥10 one-way) is only worth it if you have mobility issues — the walking paths are flat, shaded, and the cart skips you past the best photo spots between enclosures.
- ▸The Bifeng Gorge Panda Center (碧峰峡), 150 km from Chengdu in Ya'an, has 1/10 the crowds and you can pet a panda (separate program, ¥500). If you have an extra day and care about the close-up experience, it's worth the 2-hour drive over the city Base.
- ▸Best photo spots: the front observation deck of Panda Villa No. 2 between 8:00-8:30 AM when pandas are eating bamboo in the foreground with the building behind. The rear-deck angle is what most foreigners get, but the contrast is worse.

Frequently asked questions about Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding
- What time should I arrive at the Chengdu Panda Base?
- Arrive for the 7:30 AM opening. Pandas are most active during the morning bamboo feeding before 10 AM; after that they finish eating and sleep for the rest of the day, so you mostly see motionless fur. Aim to be at the front gate by 7:15. The base is open until 6 PM, but the early window is what makes the trip worth it.
- Do I need my passport to enter the Panda Base?
- Yes. A foreign passport is required to buy a ticket, currently 60 RMB. Bring the physical document, not a photo. The base spans 100 hectares, so plan 3 to 4 hours to walk the enclosures; the paths are flat and shaded. Try to avoid weekends and Chinese public holidays, when crowds can climb past 50,000 people.
- Can I hold or touch a panda at the Chengdu Panda Base?
- No. The city base is a viewing-only research center; pandas are seen in semi-natural enclosures, not held. Hands-on panda volunteer programs run at the separate Dujiangyan Panda Research Center, about 70 km away, as a roughly 700 RMB program booked through the official site. Do not pay the inflated markups some resellers list for the same experience.
