What Chinese travelers actually do here
Distilled from Chinese-language travel notes — the practical tips most English guides miss.
- ▸The glass-floored underground excavation hall is the highlight; skip the outdoor mound paths if you are short on time.
- ▸Visit on a weekday afternoon when tour groups have thinned, leaving the pits almost to yourself.
- ▸Arrange your return taxi before you go in; ride-hail cars are slow to reach this semi-rural spot.
- ▸The on-site Hanyangling Underground Museum completes the Han story, so allow the full 2.5 to 3 hours.
- ▸Floors stay cool year-round; bring a light layer even in summer for the climate-controlled pit hall.
- ▸Photography over the glass works best with phone lens flat to the floor to kill reflections.
- ▸If you have a full day, pair it with Famen Temple further west rather than doubling back to the city.

Frequently asked questions about Han Yang Ling Tomb (Jing Emperor's Mausoleum)
- Is Han Yang Ling worth visiting if I've already seen the Terracotta Warriors?
- Yes, and it makes a good contrast. The Terracotta army is life-size; here the figures are miniature (about 60 cm) but far more numerous, depicting a whole Han court including women, eunuchs and livestock. You walk on glass floors directly over the pits, and it draws roughly a tenth of the Terracotta crowds, so it feels calm and unhurried.
- How do I get to Han Yang Ling from central Xi'an?
- There is no direct metro, so most foreign visitors take a taxi or ride-hail, roughly 30 minutes from the city center toward Xianyang in Weicheng District. Show the driver the Chinese name 汉阳陵. Because return taxis are scarce at the site, ask your driver to wait or pre-book a return through your hotel or a ride-hail app.
- Do I need to book ahead or bring my passport?
- Booking is recommended rather than mandatory, but bring your passport regardless, as Chinese museums use it for entry and any reservation. Entry is around 80 yuan. Visa and Mastercard are accepted, though carrying some cash for the taxi is wise. English guided tours are available if arranged in advance.
