Guangfulin is an archeological site in Songjiang that has revealed evidence of human settlement going back 4,000 years (a 'Guangfulin Culture' is named after it). To make the site accessible, the local government built a museum complex in 2018 — but instead of a normal building, they put the Han-dynasty-style halls and pavilions HALF UNDERWATER, so the upturned roofs appear to float on a lake. It is one of the most photographed cultural sites in suburban Shanghai, especially at golden hour. Inside the actual museum (underwater) is a thoughtful collection on Songjiang's pre-Shanghai history. Around the lake are reconstructed 'old town' alleys with restaurants. Plan 2.5 hours.
