What Chinese travelers actually do here
Distilled from Chinese-language travel notes — the practical tips most English guides miss.
- ▸Don't try to walk the full 15 km perimeter — half the lake is paths through forest with no view. Walk from Broken Bridge (北山街) along the north shore to Su Causeway, then bike the rest. The walking-best section is only the northern 4 km.
- ▸Rent a bike at the public bike-share stalls (¥1.5/hour with Alipay), not the tourist rental shops (¥30/day) — the bikes are identical. Stations are every 200m around the lake; just dock + walk at any photo spot.
- ▸The boat ride to Three Pools (小瀛洲岛) is the only way to actually see the famous ¥1-banknote scene. Boats run from Hubin Park (湖滨), ¥55 round-trip including island walk. Buy ticket at the kiosk by the pier, NOT from touts on the path.
- ▸Leifeng Pagoda's view OF the lake is much better than the lake's view of the pagoda. ¥40 elevator ride to the top deck, best 1 hour before sunset when Su Causeway lines up with the sun setting behind it.
- ▸Avoid the Hupao Spring 'Dragon Well' tea sale in Longjing Village (龙井村) — the tourist-pressure 'free tasting → ¥500/jin sale' funnel is aggressive. Buy Longjing tea at a Hangzhou supermarket (¥80/jin) instead; identical leaves with markup gone.
- ▸Lingyin Temple (灵隐寺) is 8 km west of the lake but mistakenly listed as 'next to West Lake' by most guides. It needs a separate half-day. If short on time skip the temple and stay on the lake.
- ▸Best sunset spot is at Wu Mountain Square (吴山广场) — the elevated terrace where most tour groups never go. 360° view including pagoda, lake, and old town rooftops. Free.
- ▸The Light Show at Three Pools (三潭印月夜景) is only lit during Mid-Autumn Festival (mid-September to mid-October). The rest of the year people show up at night expecting illumination and get only city-lights reflection. Set expectations accordingly.

Frequently asked questions about West Lake
- Is West Lake free to visit?
- Yes — the lake itself and the surrounding paths and parks are free, including the Su and Bai causeways, Broken Bridge, Solitary Hill, and the Hubin promenade. The only paid attractions are the boat ride to Three Pools Mirroring the Moon (¥45-55 round trip), Leifeng Pagoda's elevator and viewing deck (¥40), and a few small lakeside museums. West Lake's no-ticket-gate status is unusual for a UNESCO World Heritage site.
- How long do you need at West Lake?
- Half a day is the realistic minimum if you bike a half-loop and stop for tea. A full day lets you bike the entire 15 km perimeter slowly, ride the boat to Three Pools, climb Leifeng Pagoda for the sunset view, and have a proper Hangzhou dinner. Two days is ideal if you also want to explore the surrounding tea hills, Lingyin Temple, and a Longjing tea-village visit.
- When is the best time of year to visit West Lake?
- April-May for the peach-blossom-and-osmanthus spring scenery, and September-November for crisp autumn light and the cassia bloom. Avoid June-August (humid, hot, daily rainstorms) and the Chinese national holiday weeks (May 1, October 1-7 — crowds reach 5x normal). The classical Eight Views — Su Causeway in Spring Dawn, Lingering Snow on Broken Bridge — are best in their named seasons.
- How do you get to West Lake from Hangzhou East Station?
- Take Hangzhou Metro Line 1 from Hangzhou East Railway Station four stops to Longxiangqiao (¥4, 15 min) — exit C drops you at Hubin Park on the lake's east shore. A taxi is 20-25 min and ¥25-35 depending on traffic. From Hangzhou Xiaoshan International Airport, Metro Line 1 also runs direct to Longxiangqiao in about 45 minutes for ¥8.
- Is a boat ride on West Lake worth it?
- Yes — the Three Pools Mirroring the Moon ride (the small islet that's the ¥1 banknote scene) is the only way to see the famous postcard angle, and the 60-minute round trip is genuinely scenic. Boats depart from Hubin Park, Solitary Hill, and Huagang Park every 15 minutes, ¥45-55 round trip. Avoid the private rowboat hawkers at the shore — they charge ¥150+ for a generic loop.
