The Grand Canal (运河) connects Beijing to Hangzhou — 1794 km, started by Sui Emperor Yang (605 CE) but largely Yuan-era engineering. UNESCO inscribed 2014. Hangzhou is the southern terminus, marked by the Gongchen Bridge (1631, Ming dynasty) — a 92m stone arch bridge often called the canal's 'Mile Zero'. The surrounding Gongchen Bridge Historic Cultural Block has restored canal-side commercial buildings (now cafes + small museums). Free walking. The Hangzhou Arts and Crafts Museum + China Knife Scissors and Sword Museum on the canal side (free entries) cover traditional crafts. Best evening 6-9 PM with canal-side lights + the bridge lit up. Bus 67 from West Lake / metro Line 4 to Gongchen Bridge Station.
